Jackrabbit Bike Review: Micro Fun

This is The first thing you need to know about the Jackrabbit mini bike: You will attract attention. I can’t wait to unbox my bright yellow minivan, immediately shoot a series of videos to send to all my friends.

I cycled to the post office and someone stopped me at the bike rack. As I parked it outside the brewery for an outdoor lunch, a car pulled up and swooped down the window to ask me about it as I sped past. Such extreme cuteness is a very underrated aspect of driving a microcar in my opinion. Not only is it more convenient, but it’s also more likely to ride if you encounter constant validation every time you go out.

As ebikes have become bigger and more and more like motorcycles, some companies have gone in the exact opposite direction, making the bikes very easy to toss in the trunk of your car or stow away in the corner of your dorm room. The Jackrabbit was the first one I tested, and it’s by far the cutest one. It has its flaws, but unless you’re transporting a kid, a lightweight and relatively affordable micro ebike like this might be the best solution for you.

Pint-Size

Jackrabbit is very small right under the box. The wheelbase, or axle-to-axle distance, is a minuscule 26 inches – compared to my ultra-small road bike, which has a wheelbase of about 40 inches. It weighs only 24 pounds. Over there We Road bikes and even carbon fiber bikes are small in weight, but not by much and certainly not at this price point.

Assembly is easy, and transitions to transport are easy too — you just fold down the handlebars and take out the seat post and you can squeeze it almost anywhere you want. It fits neatly both in my crowded garage and in the trunk of a car next to my kid’s scooter and everyone’s helmet on the way to the park, making my family outings easy. a little easier.

Jackrabbit has no pedals. There’s two legroom, but you don’t have to pedal to push the bike forward. Instead, you use the thumb control on your right hand, which can make it difficult for anyone to go left. The lack of pedal power puts Jackrabbit in a gray area when it comes to the law. For example, the New York State DMV classifies the Jackrabbit as an electric vehicle with a seat; they are currently working on getting the pedals to work, will then categorize it as a 2nd class ebike legally allowed to recharge at 20 mph.

CEO Jason Kenagy noted that they have not encountered any regulatory hurdles, which confirms my suspicion that any electric vehicle looks more like a bicycle than a motorcycle. will be treated like a car by the authorities.

Getting used to not having any pedals is harder than you think, but I got it; Maintaining a constant speed on the thumb throttle was difficult until I realized I could slow down full time. It has a 300 watt rear hub motor powered by a 36V battery in the down tube. You can easily remove the small battery or charge it in the frame because the bike is very light. It has the stated 12 mile range. Five years ago, this would have been fine. Currently, most ebikes can go more than twice as far.

It took a while to readjust to my riding habits. What I thought would be a quick morning ride to the skate park 1.5 miles from my house, I walked a mile home, carrying a small bike on my shoulder. The battery also won’t last very long if you take it somewhere and let all your friends take it circling around the block. I suggest bringing an additional battery for longer ride time.

When you see someone riding around on a mini bike, the first thing most people think of is a BMX bike. Aside from the fact that BMX bikes have pedals, you’ll note that they also have slightly different shapes. You have to do tricks with them, so the seat and headpost have slightly different angles for better maneuverability.
