Jackbox 8th Party Pack Worth For ‘Drawful: Animate’ Alone

When I consider Jackbox Party Pack 7, I was pleasantly surprised. Usually these bundles include some fun games and some games you never touch, but this is different. The Saturday pack is perfect, there are no real duds in the group. Unfortunately, the eighth move failed to continue that trend. On average, it’s still worth it. But some games are killer land mines.

For those unfamiliar, Jackbox Party Packs are a series of annual mini-game collections from Jackbox Games, the makers of games like You don’t know Jack. Each pack comes with five games, often with a variety of play styles, so no matter how your team likes to play, you can enjoy it. In recent bundles, the company has tackled a balance of drawing games, puns, quizzes, and/or social reasoning, without relying too much on individual games.

And this time, the drawing game knocked it out of the park.

I can’t stress enough how good Fascinating: Animation To be

The obvious stand out star of this pack is Fascinating: Animation, and it’s not even close. Two previous versions of Interesting for the most part the same premise: You get a prompt and have to draw what it suggests, other players write suggestions telling them what the title you got, and then everyone guesses the title what exactly. It’s a simple formula that has worked for years.

The latest iteration adds a seemingly small innovation. The player can now draw the second frame. The first image will display, slightly lighter in color, and the two images will alternate in a loop when presented to the audience. It feels like very crude movie scripts, but the impact on gameplay is significant.

Now, you’re not just stuck drawing stick shapes or static images. Your doodles can explode, transform, melt, fly away. In short, they can move. This opens up a wide range of creative possibilities. Better yet, players who drew the animation get a slider to speed it up or slow it down.

This is where Jackbox games come into play at their best. Simple rules give players plenty of room for creative expression. That means this game can vary a lot depending on how much your team interacts with it, but at least it’s accessible and fun.

And at the opposite end of the spectrum, there is…

Weapon drawn It’s confusing, we can’t play it

Jackbox has focused more on social reasoning games in its recent packs—the genre where you suspect your friends of various crimes or deceptions and have to figure out who is lying—but they very difficult to understand properly. A game like this needs clear rules, mechanics to both deceive other players, discern the truth, and enough storyline to keep players engaged without overwhelming them.

Weapon drawn, unfortunately, doesn’t do most of these tasks. At the start of the game, players are informed that they are all world-famous detectives attending a lavish party where murders are likely. They were asked to draw a prompt that included a given letter from their name. Then they had to draw a second drawing with a different prompt but using the same letter. Then they had to choose a name for their accomplice.
