“It’s a weird vibe”: Watch ‘Sex and the City’ test, 25 years later

As teenagers in California who dreamed of moving to New York City, Chelsea is not fair And Lauren Garroni grow up Sex and the city. Even the show’s main art looks enticing: “Naked Sarah Jessica Parker sits on the New York City skyline with her laptop strategically shielding her,” recalls Fairless, who first released a DVD of the HBO comedy in 1998, when she was about 14 years old. “My parents are perfectly fine when I watch Sex and the city as a teenager,” said 13-year-old Garroni. “But they won’t let me see Sopranos.”

Like Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha, Fairless and Garroni all eventually moved to New York City. They met at Parsons School of Design, though their shared obsession with the series wasn’t what brought them together: “Until the day we started creating Instagram accounts,” says Garroni, “We didn’t think so. I used to talk about Sex and the city.”

As Fairless jokes, they certainly “make up for lost time”. Their account, @everyoutfitonsatc, is a haunting catalog of Sex and the citystyle of ; Since its launch in 2016, it has attracted more than 730,000 followers. Fairless and Garroni have also collaborated on We should all be Mirandas,—a book filled with “life lessons from Sex and the City the most underrated character — and the definitive thing Sex and the city audio files every outfitgo beyond SATC to dissect everything from the Met Gala to the Kardashians.

honored Sex and the citycelebrating their 25th anniversary this spring, Fairless and Garroni spent an episode every outfit look back at the show’s pilot, which aired on June 6, 1998. The couple then called VF via Zoom from their home in Los Angeles to discuss Carrie Bradshaw’s intro, the distorted reality version of the show, and where they wanted to meet Carrie and co. join the upcoming second season of HBO Sex and the city sequel series, And just like that.

Vanity Fair: I always forget the difference of Sex and the city the pilot is from the rest of the series.

Chelsea is not fair: It was a strange vibe. At the time, they didn’t really envision how the show would turn out. The first episode was literally adapted from columnist Candace Bushnell.

Lauren Garroni: Sarah Jessica Parker herself told a story where she forgot she shot the pilot. That’s how… I won’t say trivial. I won’t put words in her mouth. But [it shows] the lack of expectation she even had towards the performance.

It’s crazy to think that Sarah Jessica Parker, who is so closely tied to the character of Carrie Bradshaw, almost didn’t take the role.

Garroni: She just has it. I really couldn’t imagine any other actress at the time who would play this role. She is synonymous with New York.

A lot of women move to New York because Sex and the city. It was funny, because looking back at the pilot, Carrie wanted to say that New York wasn’t what it used to be.

Garroni: It’s a symptom of every generation moving to New York. There’s the old generation saying, “You missed it.” I never thought I’d say it, but now that I’m back, I’m like, “Oh, you guys missed it.”

unfair: Pilots in particular feel a lot darker. Even Carrie’s extremely messy, shabby apartment. It’s almost like a movie noir when she’s standing on the corner of a rainy street. It really doesn’t bring out a glamorous side of New York.

Garroni: The introduction of Carrie makes her seem like the Philip Marlowe of heterosexual relationships or something, as she calls herself a sexual anthropologist.

And you just see the back of Carrie’s head smoking.

Garroni: I could swear she’d turn the camera on and say, “And that’s dating.” That will be the first moment when talking to the camera naturally. What a great introduction: “You think you’re stalking this girl? Guess what? It’s me, Carrie Bradshaw.”

The reviews make it seem like it was well received by critics. The New York Times called it “fresh and funny. What did the audience think of the movie when it was released?

unfair: It’s getting into a bad TV scene. We forgot Sex and the city was HBO’s first major TV show. It was born before Sopranos. So even Sex and the city At its worst it was probably a lot better than what was on network television at the time.

Garroni: In our 10,000 hours we are done Sex and the city, I think that’s what’s lost. it’s really Sex and the city passed before Sopranos.
