iPhone 12 Mini but better

If you’re like me and come from the iPhone 12 Mini, you’ll feel right at home with the iPhone 13 Mini. I just enough Notice the difference between the two models, which is a good thing.

Both Minis feature a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display that displays relative brightness, color accuracy, and a wide color gamut for users who like to peek at every pixel. Plus, the Minis have identical technology (front-facing camera, speaker, etc.) for video calls, audio calls, and video playback. I tested FaceTime, mobile calling, and video streaming on both phones and it tests – the quality is really the same.

But that’s the purpose of the iPhone 13 Mini, isn’t it? It doesn’t exist to revolutionize the iPhone experience the way the first iPhone Mini did, but instead offers a similar package with tweaks where it matters.

Apart from the camera placement, the iPhone 13 Mini and 12 Mini are physically identical.

Those improvements include the 13 Mini’s improved battery life, which, according to Apple, lasts 2-5 hours longer than its predecessor. First of all, considering the small battery size, the 13 Mini won’t give you the same level of endurance as the iPhone Pro Max series, but it does manage to save some extra power over the iPhone 12 Mini. If you prioritize long-lasting battery life, consider investing in one of Apple’s larger iPhones – or portable charger.

The iPhone 13 Mini also boasts a faster A15 Bionic chip, which runs more efficiently than last year’s A14. Honestly, I barely noticed any lag or freeze on newer iPhones. Honestly, though, I’ve never had a problem with my personal iPhone 12 Mini either. Is my 21st century brain simply not perceiving faster technology? Probably.

Still an everyday iPhone

For most tasks, the iPhone 13 Mini is about as capable as larger, more expensive iPhones. Playing music, sending iMessages and FaceTiming to friends is easy. Plus, it really fits in my back pocket.

Yes, the screen is small at 5.4 inches. But it does everything I need, and more: weather notifications, track outdoor runs, tap to pay, etc. Plus, iCloud automatically saves messages and photos to my MacBook, because so recent memories won’t be lost forever if I accidentally drop my phone in the toilet.

Surviving my lifestyle, the Phone 13 Mini remains resilient.

The Mini sat comfortably in my small hand as I navigated the subway, and I dropped it less often than larger handhelds. I even wrote lengthy Yelp and TripAdvisor reviews on this small but trusted monitor, accompanied by high-quality photos. Learn more about how the camera renders in a second.

It’s true – yes no iPhone 14 Mini This year. However, the iPhone 13 Mini has been optimized in many ways for most users in 2022. In fact, the iPhone 12 Mini is still a competitive device in the world of small smartphones.

Camera quality

The iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 13 Mini have almost the same cameras, except for the larger main sensor (for low-light photography) and the camera placement (vertical versus diagonal). That means both are enough for everyday use, whether you’re taking selfies, street shots, or food shots from your latest dining adventure.

For testing purposes, I also compared the iPhone 13 Mini’s camera with the iPhone 14 Pro’s – and the results were surprising. See comparison below. In terms of brightness, sharpness and color accuracy, the Mini is on par with the Pro. There are differences in how and what the camera chooses to focus on and how warm the colors are, but overall, I’m perfectly fine with the Mini’s output.

However, the 13 Mini’s camera has one drawback: Inability to focus on objects closer to the lens than 5 inches. So if you’re trying to capture the paper cut on your dog’s nose, you’ll have to (gasp) digitally zoom in from a distance.

The 13 Mini boasts one advantage over the 12 Mini: My current cinematic video mode, which focuses with greater precision while increasing contrast and depth. And honestly, it works. Normal video recording appears noticeably two-dimensional in comparison.

However, if capturing high-quality video is a top priority for your iPhone experience, then you’re better off using iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max. Both feature ProRes and macro video recording to enhance production quality.

Mini will return?

As the sales numbers suggest, the iPhone Mini is Apple’s least popular product line. And with Apple moving into larger Plus-sized phones, the 13 Mini could very well be the best and ultimate miniature iPhone you can buy today.

However, the iPhone Mini has the potential to make a comeback, like Cnet indicate, but not in the form iPhone SE. In the past, Apple recycled the body design of older iPhone models with newer processors and launched it under the moniker iPhone SE. Could the iPhone 13 Mini be the next SE? Only time will tell, but let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Key point

Is the iPhone 13 Mini still a viable option for users who want the best iPhone experience in a smaller package? Sure. The iPhone 13 Mini serves every function that the larger, more expensive models do – except for battery life. That’s a trade-off you’ll have to accept no matter what miniature phone you use.

Growing up with an iPhone, I appreciate how the Mini’s small screen makes me spend less time online. While it may seem counter-intuitive to recommend a phone that reduces digital consumption, it’s been a lifesaver for my productivity and perceptiveness for the time being.

Because only $599, iPhone 13 Mini is a great deal. If pocketability, comfort in the hand, and iOS are at the top of your smartphone priority list, this is still a phone worth buying. For high-quality video and extended battery life, consider looking elsewhere.
