Unexpected Nintendo Switch port of SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters ‘Clash in January 2022 is a welcome for many longtime fans. Siliconera asked SNK producer Adam Laatz and Color selection for NeoGeo bag Project manager Lionel Ackah on what it takes to re-release Card Fighters ‘Clash in 2022 and whether other titles (such as Card Fighters 2 English release) is on the way.
Graham Russell, Siliconera: What do you think it’s about? SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters ‘Clash Has that allowed it to develop a devoted following over the years? What makes it special?
Adam Laatz, Producer, SNK: Strong reception for Card Fighters ‘Clash from all the way back to the late 90’s brought many fervent fans of the title and the series remains to this day. In my opinion, the simplicity and addictive gameplay, many cards, iconic characters and lots of nostalgia for the era are what make it so special in the hearts and minds of many gamers.
What are the challenges for re-release? Card Fighters ‘Clash? How did you overcome them?
Laatz: Thank you to all Code Mystics’ and the teams in Osaka & Tokyo for their hard work Battle of the Millennium, it certainly ensures that the development and re-release of this title goes quite smoothly as well. I would say that one of the challenges on the developer side is including Capcom and SNK Supporters versions of the game in one game application. That said, I should also mention the numerous requests received from our fans for this title and encouragement from [Street Fighter V director Takayuki] Nakayama at Capcom definitely helped the teams!
The Card Fighters ‘Clash re-release includes linking functionality for combat and trading, as well as connections to Battle of the Millennium. How difficult is that to accomplish? Why is that important to the team?
Lionel Ackah, Project Manager, SNK: This was an extremely difficult challenge for our collaborators at Code Mystics, involving a lot of reverse engineering. And we can proudly say that Code Mystics answered the call with the best we could possibly expect. CM and we always want to provide the best possible experience for our fans and can experience Card Fighters ‘Clash As close to the original version as possible is one of our goals.
The first Color selection for NeoGeo bag Release is just that, for the first time! Volume 1. Is this release the start of a wave of Volume 2 titles?
Ackah: For any synthesis, it always depends on the interest and support of the fans. All we can say at this point is that we are very pleased with the feedback we have received.
With Battle of the Millennium and Card Fighters ‘Clash, NeoGeo Pocket’s Color Choice effort has expanded to third-party licenses. How is it working with Capcom on these things?
Laatz: That is certainly thanks to the enthusiastic support we have received from Mr. Nakayama, Mr. Tsuchiya and their licensing team based in Tokyo. It has been a pleasure working with everyone at Capcom.
Will we see other non-SNK companies join the future, blue and speed or the other way around?
Ackah: We cannot promise anything in advance, as it is always a challenge to work on our own external franchises. But we’re doing our best to get our previous collaborators back in to help us bring back the gems of this era.
What will the process of choosing which NGPC game to respawn be like? What is your criteria?
Ackah: We have several criteria. First and foremost, read fan feedback and requests on our official social media channels. Other criteria will be gameplay, rarity and feasibility.
Is there any chance we will see an official English release of Card Fighters 2The fan-favorite sequel to this game, as part of this series?
