Some mornings, it can feel like you woke up to the wrong part multiverse. Take Wednesday for example. On that morning, just a few hours after the premiere, it was reported that Top Gun: Maverick—A sequel released more than 35 years after its predecessor — received a five-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. Five minutes! At Cannes! Listen, I’m sure the movie is a hoot, but seeing the crowd at one, we’ll say, reputation The French film festival’s celebration of a film that is still something of a hotbed for American imperialism is something of a surprise. Moreover, the festival brought Tom Cruise — a guy who loves to take pictures of pots at—a Palm d’Or. What is happening?
None of this to say I don’t like Top Guns, or Tom Cruise. Also, I doubt anyone at Cannes cares about public perception when choosing who to invite to the festival. But waking up in a world where the sequel to my favorite movie when I was 10 years old is receiving warm applause at a festival that usually glorifies bad things like that. Tree of Life and Pulp Fiction is a little thought. Top Guns! Quentin Tarantino made a name for himself by calling the original film an allegory about homosexuality. (Trust me, That is a compliment.) This is a cinematic timeline that I’m fine with living.
That, perhaps, is why it is also so amazing. Although I now clearly see its flaws, Top Guns It’s a cruel and heartbreakingly entertaining movie. Nothing inspires people to become US Navy pilots more than that. That’s certainly what filmmakers and the US government want. Tony Scott (maybe he takes a break) has directed out of it. But something so ingrained in popular culture is hard to track down. Anticipating its sequel can make you miserable, wanting something that can never live up to expectations. Fan want likes things, but is afraid of them failing — especially for things like Maverickbeen stowed away for years due to Covid-19 — could bring them all to our attention with an open eye.

Talk about things that are better seen with the eyes close the doorFirst trailer for Marvel’s new Disney+ show She is heavy down this week. Unlike Mavericka sequel that has a lot of things to live for, She is heavy There is a lot of potential that seems to be left unmet. Seemingly based on the comic book of the same name, the new series is about Jennifer Walters, a 30-year-old lawyer who is also a green wanderer. (Full title is, I’m not joking, She-Hulk: Lawyer.) It has all the right serums: Mark Ruffalo as Smart Hulk, a mix of action and comedy, and Tatiana Maslany (Black orphan) in the title role. This should be good! But judging by the trailer, it looks like someone took the script for a Ally McBeal reboot, convert some proper nouns and add science. There’s an extended scene about She-Hulk’s dating efforts. (Tinder hard when you’re green, amirit?) The trailer can’t be crammed with everything, but the man it looks cringe.
