Windy and dusty conditions along I-55 in Illinois led to a pile of cars that sent at least 30 people to the hospital on Monday.
The crash happened late Monday morning just south of Springfield, Illinois, Related press report. The dust storm was triggered by strong winds blowing through farmers’ fields preparing for spring planting. All the bare dust and strong winds have significantly reduced visibility for drivers. Police estimate between 40 and 60 passenger cars were involved and several semi-trailers, two of which were burned to the ground. Police also said that many people were killed in the collision and specific numbers will be provided later.
The National Weather Service has issued a “blow dust warning” for areas in central Illinois through 7 p.m. after the crash, NBCChicago report. However, the warning was not issued for the area where the accident occurred:
The warning said: “Severely limited visibility is expected. “Traveling would be very dangerous and possibly life-threatening.”
The National Weather Service urged those warned to stay indoors until the storm passes.
“Get ready for the possibility of a sudden drop in visibility near zero,” the NWS states. “If you encounter dust on the road or see it approaching, pull over to the side of the road as far as you can and park your vehicle. Turn off the lights and keep your foot off the brake pedal.
Blowing dust caused a pile of cars on I-55 between Divernon and Farmersville, outside Springfield, where visibility was reported to be “less than a quarter of a mile.”
Interstate 55 remains closed in both directions from mile 52 to mile 80. Video from social media shows the wreckage of the crash:
The NWS is predicting High winds will continue throughout the week, with a strong wind warning for central Illinois through 2 a.m. tonight. Winds return Wednesday and could reach speeds of 40 mph.
