IFA: Lenovo unveils next-generation Glasses T1 wearable display, ThinkPad X1 Fold, etc.

In front of IF ONE in Berlin, Lenovo announced a range of devices, including laptops, tablets, Chromebooks and monitors – and first a pair of glasses that offer virtual displays.

They won’t be available outside of China until 2023, but the Lenovo Glasses T1 (which will be called the Lenovo Yoga Glasses in China) looks set to make an appearance at IFA. Described as a “wearable private display for content consumption on the go”, the TI Glasses are compatible with USB-C equipped smartphones, tablets and laptops and will connect with Lightning-equipped iOS devices via the optional adapter.

Looking like a regular pair of sunglasses and less like a stylish piece that attracts ridicule, the T1 Glasses come with interchangeable nose clips and adjustable temple sleeves to maximize comfort, and also supports custom prescription lenses via the mountable bracket. The temple arm also houses a pair of speakers, as well as controls for volume, screen brightness, and color temperature. The virtual display, which can be fixed to a fixed point in space or allowed to move with your head, is delivered via micro-OLED technology with 1080p resolution per eye, 60Hz refresh rate and 10:000:1 contrast ratio.

Use cases for the T1 Glasses include mobile gaming and providing mobile professionals with the convenience of a “personal monitor in their pocket”. “Using Lenovo Glasses T1, workers have their own workspace to avoid shoulder slouching,” says Lenovo.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold (2022)

The second-generation ThinkPad X1 Fold offers significantly more screen space than 13.3-inch predecessorthanks to the spacious 16.3-inch 4:3 OLED touchscreen, which folds down to the 12-inch display for use with the magnetically attachable keyboard in laptop mode.

Not only is the screen bigger, but the bezels are thinner (~10mm) and the device is thinner when unfolded (8.6mm) and when folded (17.4mm). Like the original model, the ThinkPad X1 Fold 2022 is tough enough to pass MIL-STD-810H test.

Inside, the 2022 X1 Fold runs Windows 11 on a 12th Gen Intel U Series processor (up to Core i7 with vPro) with up to 32GB of RAM and up to 1TB of SSD storage. Iris Xe integrates Intel’s CPU for graphics processing.

As well as being bigger, prettier, and more powerful (but still fanless), the new X1 Fold has impressive sustainability credentials. The removable back cover is made from 100% recycled textile and the post-consumer materials used in the enclosure, power supply and biodegradable outer packaging.

This flexible foldable device supports several operating modes, guided by Lenovo’s Mode Switcher interface: classic clamshell mode with 12-inch main screen and virtual keyboard, or physics in the lower half; landscape or portrait mode with the 16.3-inch screen fully unfolded and mounted on a magnetic mount; and two handheld modes – book and tablet.

The new ThinkPad X1 Fold is also the first to incorporate an enhanced version of Intel’s Image Sensor Controller (VSC), which manages a 5MP webcam to provide auto-framing, ‘wake-on-wake-on’ authentication approach’, ‘step lock’ and ‘viewer detection’, among other useful features.
