Just a day after Microsoft announced its new Entra cloud identity services portfolio, one of Entra’s core products experienced inconsistent performance for more than 12 hours.

Microsoft warns that users of Azure Active Directory Identity Services (AD), as well as some downstream Azure services, may have received “missed or mistakenly sent warnings”. That can be a headache for customers who rely on Azure AD to control employee access to Office 365 and other applications. Customers may also experience problems accessing Azure Portal, MSGraph, Log Analytics, PowerShell, and Application Insights.

The company has now rolled out a hotfix for an issue that engineers determined was caused by a “recent change to the underlying infrastructure”.

While this was not an issue, there was an extended period of “significant delay” in writing data from Azure AD and other services, which affected US Azure customers late May 31 and European customers on the morning of June 1.

“During the period from 21:35 UTC May 31 to 09:54 UTC June 1, 2022, customers may experience significant delays in the availability of logging data for their documents. resources such as logging and audit logs for Azure Active Directory and other Azure Services, accessing tools such as Azure Portal, MSGraph, Log Analytics, PowerShell, and/or Application Insights. omitted or mistaken warnings,” Microsoft said.

After implementing the fix, Microsoft removed the problem from live Azure status pagepreviously pointed out a logging issue that is affecting Azure AD globally.

While attempting to resolve the issue, Microsoft reported that Azure Resource Management-based services were also experiencing operational failures.

“During this time, Azure Resource Manager dependent services may also experience CRUD (create, read, update, and delete) operation errors, with some requests encountering errors communicating with the services. Azure is different,” Microsoft said.

Azure AD is at the core of Microsoft’s new Entra identity services suite and is used by millions of organizations to manage multi-factor authentication, conditional access, and authentication to on-premises and cloud applications. Entra also includes Azure AD External Identity to manage B2B and B2C connections, as well as Cloud Infrastructure Entitlement Management (CIEM) and Decentralized Identity.

When Azure AD crashes, it affects other cloud services. In September 2020, Office 365 users have unable to access their applications due to prolonged Azure AD outage. Then in March 2021, Azure AD down for 14 hours prevented users from accessing Office, Dynamics, Teams, Xbox Live, and Azure Portal.

With the most recent disruption to Azure AD, Microsoft said it will continue to investigate what happened to determine the “full root cause” and figure out how to prevent future disruptions. future.
