I Worry About Drobo – The User in Photoshop by Scott Kelby

Must come this week. I have two Drobos – one at home and one at work, and I keep them synced and I haven’t had any issues. In fact, last week I bragged about how someone at home warned me that one of my drives was about to fill up and I needed to replace it soon. That was before I got this email (below):

Dear Mr. Kelby: I am writing to ask for your advice on Drobo. – My Drobo died in November 2019 just before the pandemic hit. For almost 2 years now, I have not been able to reach anyone from Drobo by email or by phone. The website says “sold out” on all models. My question is: what would you do in this situation? I drowned when I got access to my files and couldn’t get any younger. Any help would be appreciated.”

That doesn’t sound good.

I’ve written him back to let him know that I haven’t heard anything about Drobo news (although they were acquired by another company a few years ago), but I’ll get started. do some research on it and i will contact them myself and see if i can get him to help.

Their website is on, but no one is at home

He’s right – every product on their website shows “sold out” and it seems like that’s been the case since at least August 2020 and I don’t know why they are” out of stock” for 18 months (chip shortages, supply chain issues, etc.), and nothing on their website to explain why everything is out of stock. No banners to the top or announcements on the pages etc, but I know this – companies make a living selling products but haven’t had any for 18 months and don’t give a reason why in general doesn’t have a particularly bright future.

So I called them. I pressed the appropriate number to be connected to Sales to inquire when the new units would be available and how to get service. It sends me to voicemail where it says, “No one is here to take your calls. Leave message.”

I think I will try again another day, and I get the same “No one is here to take your calls. Leave message.” So I left a message this time as the editor of Photoshop users magazine, called to ask about the company’s status for an article I was going to write in the magazine about Drobo. It’s been four days. Do not call back. No response yet.

No one was there to take our calls. Sorry.

I checked their social media accounts. There’s only been one Tweet on their account in the last six months, saying they didn’t find any compatibility issues with Mac OS Monterey and before that, the last tweets were from August. Pretty much the same across all their social networks. All are not great signs. And of course, the gentlemen who sent me the initial email didn’t get any help from them, or from my efforts, and that’s not great.

In short, I’m worried enough because I’m currently looking for another photo storage solution

I’m a bit worried that if my Drobo crashes, I’m in the same situation as that guy. Yes, I have a backup (and a cloud backup) and a Synology NAS at work, but I won’t sleep well if my stuff isn’t 100% sure on my desktop. I. Search is on and I’ll let you guys know how it goes (and I’m open to your ideas if you have a solid, fast, scalable desktop solution) .

Of course, there is always the possibility that everything will be fine at Drobo and they will soon have a mass stock and start contacting their customers who have serious and timely problems. That could quite possibly be the case. But, if I were a bettor…

Well, not the best news to send you over the weekend, so don’t focus on that, but focus instead on the fact that after our company KelbyOne holiday luncheon today, I’m on vacation until next week, so that’s great!! ! That’s what I’ll be focusing on this weekend. That and playing Call of Duty Warzone, rating some of my weapons in Vanguard, spending time recording music, hanging out with my amazing family and eating delicious food for the holidays because, like them, As we all know, holiday food doesn’t contain calories, carbs, fat, or anything bad. That’s the magic of Christmas. True story.

Happy holiday everyone!

-Scott
