It’s only been a year since TikTok claims that extras, smiley emoticons and, most significantly, skinny jeans passed. However, this week’s fashion controversies tell a very different story. With PradaTory Burch, Salvatore Ferragamo and Sportmax all have bottoms that fit in S/S 23 collectionsit seems that instead of “going out”, skinny pants and trousers in reverse, prepare to be the biggest of spring and most controversial trend. Too much for a 20 year trend cycle.
Here’s what happened: Thanks to social media and fast fashion speeding up everything style-related, the patterns we once trusted to predict trends are now gone. in-futile. Trends no longer have 10 or 20 years at their peak. Maybe, depending on how a few TikToks work, they have the best one or two. So, after investing heavily in baggier, loose-fitting pants for several years now, we’re bound to see the opposite models take their place. It’s also important to note that skinny jeans and jeans have been absent from catwalks and street style for years now, long before that. Gen Z condemns them in 2021. So indeed, with the trend cycle increasing dramatically, we should foresee a return of body-hugging pants back to fashion.
Of course, with Miuccia Prada, Raf Simons and Maximilian Davis (whose first Ferragamo collection debuted last week) in charge of the branding design of the once-hated silhouette, the result is skinny pants that will always good.
