A total of 19,743 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 electric vehicles are being recalled due to concerns about folding vehicles.
Separate recall notice from Hyundai and That both stated that a “software bug in the Gearshift Control Unit” in affected vehicles could cause the vehicle to roll over. This can happen due to voltage fluctuations when the vehicle is stopped and parked, which can interrupt the signal from the Gearshift Controller to the parking mechanism.
The recall includes 10,729 Hyundai vehicles and 9,014 Kia vehicles. The Ioniq 5 and EV6 share the E-GMP platform, and there is substantial software and component sharing between the two models. Hyundai has also informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the Genesis GV60 and G80 EV 2023 use the same parking mechanism, but these EVs are yet to be sold in the United States.

Vehicle owners will be notified when to take the vehicle to the dealer for a free update of the Shifter Controller software. Until then, owners should park on the premises whenever possible.
While this is a software issue, it highlights that Kia and Hyundai are still unable to deploy over-the-air fixes or upgrades to propulsion or safety systems — even if the E-GMP platform has its ability.
Tesla has, for many years, been able to resolve issues that would otherwise require a physical service visit by deploy the firmware fix over the network. Though sometimes Tesla needs to fix a recall with service visits.
