How to shoot during the day, but make it look like night
Have you ever wanted to shoot at night but during the day? Well, it’s entirely possible, and it’s not even difficult if you know how to properly control the light. In this video, take a behind-the-scenes shot of an outdoor shoot during the day to create images as if they were in the middle of the night.
To take pictures that look as if they were taken at night when they aren’t, is a skill to have. There are two main reasons for this desire in my own work: the first is that the shoot is scheduled during the day and cannot be filmed at night. The second is that shooting during the day can be much easier, depending on the type of photo you’re creating.
In this video by Profoto, you can see a behind-the-scenes look at a shot taken in a forest during the day, but the result looks as if it were nighttime. The effect is done great – no doubt about it – but I wanted to make some extra moves. Firstly, if you have an extremely bright continuous light, like I do, you can really draw some contrast and shadows into the frame. I also used LEDs in the scene and in this shot I might have tried them inside the lights. The second move is an entire field in and of itself: post-production. If you know what you can do in Photoshop, you can shoot for it and push the boundaries even further.
