How to set up paper seamlessly without an assistant

Working with a photo assistant can often make your life easier. Having someone else do the heavy lifting for you can set you free to focus on working with your client during one shoot. When you don’t have to worry about moving nightstands or checking lighting, you can put more effort into creating a memorable experience for your guests.

While it’s desirable to work with an assistant, there are a number of reasons why you might work alone. Sometimes your budget doesn’t allow hiring an assistant. Or, it may happen that you had the money to pay an assistant, but you worked alone and pocketed the money for yourself. Other times, the shooting location does not allow additional people. It could also be that you booked an assistant, but there was a last-minute cancellation and you had to do the shoot alone.

If you find yourself in any of these situations, it’s important that you’re able to complete all the required tasks in the shot without assistance. In this video, I detail a step-by-step process that you can use to set up a series of 9′ seamless background paper your own. Paper is mounted on a Avenger Mini Boom Armmounted a Avenger C-Stand. You will also need a A-Clamp. I have used this method dozens of times and I believe it will work for you too.
