How to refresh your space, without renovating

i live in a narrow space and when it comes to refresh my house, my budget (unfortunately) has its limits. At times, it can feel like a challenge to do anything without dropping large coins. But with a little inspiration, creativity and perhaps a few buckets of paint, transform your home on a budget — and sometimes, for free — is entirely possible. If you’re wondering how to freshen up your space for spring and beyond, look no further than these 10 ideas.

This list of easy yet impactful ideas was inspired by my own space redesign journey. While my overall aesthetic remains consistent, I go through changes and seasons where I feel more neutral and natural and others when I want my house above bolder and more abstract face of things. Our tastes are evolving, and we should have the freedom to reflect that in the spaces in which we live. So without drilling any new holes in your wall, dive into the (transformation) tips below.

Do a layout check

There’s a reason our love for HGTV and Magnolia Network will never die. Watching people refresh their spaces and remodel their homes is… gratifying. But if you’re clicking away from this article with a single cut (and believe me, there’s a lot to deal with), leave it as is: Even the smallest tweaks to your layout can can have a huge impact. Try taking one of two approaches. Start by mapping out your space and prepare for a pre-planned success or to design your home. artist shine, move your parts and see how the changes resonate. Good news? If you don’t like it, just move your sofa to the other side of the room.

Fixing the bedside cabinet

If I had to choose any surface in my space where a little redesign would go a long way, it would be my nightstand. Some of my favorite social media content are time-lapse videos by interior design experts and influencers. refresh their bedside table. Take a moment to consider what items and items you want to prioritize in your bedroom. Book? Yes. Glass of water? Sure? Telephone? Definitely (maybe?) No.

Play with your books

Try displaying your books on a ledge or overlay instead of stacked coffee table where they don’t have enough love. Bookstores and libraries are always a source of supply design inspiration for meand displaying featured covers on a ledge gets you one step closer. Chances are you already have a variety of shapes, sizes, and genres that can work well with any color scheme.

Put your profile up

The album artwork is part of the appeal of vinyl! Give it a proper foundation by leaning them against a shelf or ledge. They’re also thin enough that you can layer something else on top for more depth. Compared to original or framed artwork, records (especially second-hand ones) are an accessible way to start your art collection. When it comes to profiles, remember that they’re not just pretty pictures. Seeing them displayed will be an inspiring reminder of all the joy music brings in your life.

Infuse your space with love

Speaking of the emotions design can infuse into your space… If your family or travel photos are tucked away in a drawer, frame a few photos and place them on your ledge. I’ve seen beautiful outcrops that are purely black and white family photos, which I’d love to try one day.

Layer in the light

A little light can go a long way. The way light travels throughout our space and illuminates every nook and cranny can completely transform not only the look of your home, but the way you feel in every room. With multi-layered lighting, your home can feel comfortable and welcoming. And while how you design the lighting in your home is a completely personal choice, creating the perfect balance between the three types of light is key. A refresher:

Ambient light. Mimic the natural light that floods into your home through the windows.

Task lighting. Illuminate work, activity and play areas.

Lights. Used to highlight design elements in your home.

Disclaimer: You don’t need to drop $$$ for new lighting fixtures. Move the lamp to another table in your living room or even try swapping out some shades for a softer effect. I also love mine Philips Hue bulbs lets you create your own custom mood lighting — all from your phone.

Hardware fun

Knobs, handles, handles and hinges — these seemingly small, overlooked elements of your space can have a significant impact on its overall appearance. Swapping out old-fashioned things in the kitchen, bathroom, or on any piece of furniture in the home can make things look brand new and inspiring.

Strategically dispersed objects throughout

You can instantly enhance any bookshelf, ledge or cover with just a few small everyday items. I sprinkled pretty bottles, postcards, crystals, pieces of wood and decorative objects to accentuate and create accents in my space. Feel free to experiment and when you get tired of it, inspiration is just a quick exchange!

Get creative with oil paintings

Try letting your favorite pieces speak for themselves and choose to base an unframed work on a cliff, on a mantelpiece, or erect a tarp or rug (minus the university dormitories).

Expand your definition of art

Framing artwork can cost almost as much as the artwork itself. For a simple solution, use washi tape to attach your frameless artwork to the wall. I also love the simple (and functional) look of hanging your hat from a hook on your wall. Because art is all in the eye of the beholder.
