How to quickly copy the color of one object to another

Sometimes the simplest wishes in post-production can turn out to be the most difficult. Color is a common example of this when you just want to take the color of one thing and make the color of another match it. Well, here’s how to do it quickly and easily.

I’ve spent a lot of my career creating images for advertisements or editorials. In either case, color is paramount to the overall look and even the success of an image. One of the most common tweaks I make is to change the colors of the objects in the frame to match the product or focus or to complement it. This can be done on set, but mixing the colors of two unrelated things is much more difficult than imagined, especially when it needs to be near-perfect.

In this video, Colin Smith of photoshopCAFE shows you how he copies the color of one object and “pastes” it onto another. It sounds like an easy task, and it will work if you know how, but if not, I can tell you from experience that it’s a nasty nightmare. There are several ways to achieve consistent results, and for the best accuracy I recommend curves. However, this technique is fast and sufficient for most images and jobs!
