How to help war victims in Ukraine


Every day Russia continues to invade Ukraine, the number of people affected by the war is increasing. WIRED’s coverage of the conflict has highlighted transformative uses of social media, from TikTok mess increase dependency on Telegram. Senior writer Matt Burgess reported how cybersecurity professionals volunteer in Ukraine fight online against Russia.

If you’ve been watching the invasion from afar and are looking for ways to support the Ukrainian people, we’ve rounded up eight organizations operating in the region that can use your financial support. Many of these groups are providing direct assistance, such as food and first aid, to people displaced by war. Other donation options on this list include a Ukrainian news organization and groups working to alleviate the long-term effects of armed conflict.

Ukrainian Red Cross

Founded in 1918, Ukrainian Red Cross especially helped the victims of the Chernobyl disaster. Currently, they are providing medicine, beds, food, mental health support, first aid lessons and other direct support to the people of Ukraine. Recent group posted on Twitter about providing food and water to thousands of civilians as they took shelter underground in public transportation stations.

Children’s voices

Children’s voices works with psychologists and is committed to helping children traumatized by war. The group’s website shares heartbreaking stories of young people about their wartime experiences. The Voices of Children art therapy program is designed as a safe space where children can go through complex emotions and feel supported.

Soldiers Revived Ukraine

For those who survived, the brutality of war left many soldiers permanently disabled. Soldiers Revived Ukraine is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting wounded soldiers during rehabilitation. Part of the job of Revived Soldiers of Ukraine is to help with the treatment and transportation costs of expensive, necessary medical procedures.

Kyiv Independent

International journalism from the outside has its limitations. If you want to support reporters living in Ukraine, Kyiv Independent is an English-language local news organization. A new venture from professional journalists, it recently published articles on refugee crossings and wartime casualties. The crowdfunded publication relies on more than 4,000 Patreon supporters to fund its journalism.

CARE

Born as a way to distribute surplus military rations after World War II, this non-profit organization was originally called the American Remittance Cooperative in Europe. As the scope of philanthropy expanded, the group kept this initials but updated its meaning to the Anywhere Aid and Relief Cooperative. The CARE The website for their Ukraine crisis fund states: “Our priority is to respond to the immediate needs of affected families through the distribution of vital food and water supplies, as well as hygiene supplies, cash assistance, and psychosocial support.”

International Medical Corps

The International Medical Corps Work with local staff to provide emergency assistance globally. According to the IMC, the nonprofit’s first involvement in Ukraine aid was in 1999. The group’s efforts are growing in Ukraine and are focused on providing medical help, mental health support, services for people affected by gender-based violence and pandemic prevention.

Save children

Beginning in the aftermath of World War I, Save children supporting young people around the world, as well as in America. Non-profit organization that has supported many children affected by wars in Afghanistan and Yemen. Save the Children has a relief fund especially to help Ukrainian children and say it is helping the refugees in Romania.

World Central Kitchen

Spanish Chef José Andres establish World Central Kitchen more than 10 years ago, and the organization has served millions of meals to people in crisis around the globe. According to the nonprofit, WCK is operating in Poland and feeding Ukrainian refugees across the border. Andrés is very active on social media and has posted many videos highlighting bakeries and food trucks delivering food to those in need. Emergency food efforts are at the core of the organization’s mission, and it is also dedicated to supporting those affected by climate change.
