How to deal with flat light in landscape photography

If you go to Instagram and scroll through any landscape photography page, you’ll likely see plenty of images with dramatic golden rays cascading into warm glows across their frames. And while that look is popular for a good reason, you can make equally compelling landscape photos in flat light, and this awesome video tutorial will show you how. perform.

Coming to you from Alister Benn’s Expressive photography, this excellent video discusses landscape photography in flat light. Flat lighting can be a bit disappointing when you think of an interesting venue or perfect composition, but if you’re willing to tweak your approach a bit, you can still get good results. I really like the flat light, as it gives you a much more neutral frame to work with in the post, allowing you to dodge and shoot more easily. The downside is that flat lighting is often caused by overcast skies, so you’ll need to adjust your composition a bit. If I normally let the sky have the top half or two thirds of the image, I’ll reduce that to just the top third or so in such situations. Check out the video above for a full rundown from Benn.
