How to change or cancel a Spirit Airlines flight
With the ultra-low-cost model, spirit airline is one of the most strict airlines when it comes to flight changes and cancellations. Especially since Spirit’s prices and additional fees can be quite high for an ultra-low-cost airline, you’ll want to understand Spirit Airlines’ cancellation policy before booking.
Spiritual cancellation policy
If you cancel your flight within 24 hours or less of booking and the flight is seven or more days away, you are eligible for a full refund on your original form of payment.
Spirit’s exchange and cancellation policy remains unchanged beyond this time. Here is a sliding fee scale based on the number of days before departure that you cancel or change your flight:
Day before departure | Fee |
---|---|
60 days or more. | Free of charge. |
31 to 59 days. | $69. |
7 to 30 days. | $99. |
0 to 6 days. | $119. |

It should be noted that you may be inadvertently charged other fees when canceling a Spirit Airlines flight. I was once charged $22.99 “non-refundable carrier fee” when I canceled a flight on Spirit:
I have contacted Spirit’s media relations team about the non-refundable shipping fee. “The $22.99 is the Passenger Usage Fee from your booking. It’s usually not deductible in addition to the cancellation fee, so this could be an error,” the spokesperson said.
So consider carefully when canceling a Spirit Airlines flight to make sure you only get charged a cancellation fee.
You will receive the remaining balance as a valid booking credit for trips booked within 90 days of issue. You can use the booking credit to pay for tickets, baggage, seats, fees, and taxes for any guests associated with the original booking.

bottom line
Spirit’s cancellation and change policy seems stingier than some airlines.
There was a time when a $119 change or cancellation fee would wipe out the entire value of many Spirit Airlines tickets. But like Spirit has developed its route network, the price has increased. So even if you need to change or cancel your Spirit flight at the last minute, you may still have enough credit left to start your next ride.
