As Francis Eggelton’s three English Bulldogs got older, he noticed they had trouble jumping from the floor onto his bed. He enlisted the help of his stepchild, Colin Scott, owner of Denver-based Custom Creation Woodcraft and a dog lover himself, to help him create a portable ladder, two colorful tiers that he can place alongside his bed or couch. pups an elevator.

Even better: Colin and Francis completed the project in an hour for less than $70, with enough materials to make two more sets of stairs.

“I wanted to make it easy to customize and build with or without power tools,” says Colin.

Colin’s project fits a standard sized bed, about 30 inches tall, but based on the size of your dog or bed, you can adjust the height of the steps.

Since adding stairs, British Bulldogs have been independent and fun. “It was a huge success,” Francis said.

Make it easy: Your local hardware store will cut the wood for you if you don’t feel comfortable using the saw.

What you need

  • 1 sheet of pre-sanded 4 – x 8 foot, inch plywood from your local home appliance repair shop
  • Hand saw, jigsaw or circular saw
  • Protective glasses
  • Ruler or ruler
  • Pencil
  • 1 box of -inch self-tapping screws (no drilling required)
  • Screwdriver
  • Wood glue
  • Spray paint (custom color)

Guide

  1. Along the 4-foot edge of the plank, cut the plywood into three equal sections, each 16 inches wide. Each strip can be used to make a separate set of stairs.
  2. Move over a strip, measure, mark, and cut the plywood again into six 8-inch panels.
  3. Cut the rest of the board into two 20-inch pieces. You will have 8 inches left.
  4. Spray paint your board and let it dry completely.
  5. Align two 8-inch boards so they form an L shape and secure them together with wood glue.
  6. Along the edge, screw three self-tapping screws, evenly spread. Leave a reasonable amount of space between the screws and the edge of the board for the screws to hold.
  7. Following the same steps, complete the open-sided cube with the other two boards. You should be able to see through the center.
  8. With the remaining boards form an 8 x 20 inch rectangle (your bigger step). You should now have a square and a rectangle.
  9. Align the boxes so that they are as close to each other as steps and screw the two boxes together with the three screws along both sides.
  10. You can now position the box vertically or horizontally, whichever is your (or your dog’s) preference.
