How to Add Drama and Style to Your Images in Adobe Photoshop

Taking pictures is nothing worse than going home, downloading the photos to your computer and finding that they don’t have the impact you’d expect. In this video, PHLEARN’s Aaron Nace walks you through a workflow that can help with that.

There’s a lot of truth in the saying, “in-camera.” However, this can be misunderstood by beginners and intermediates, who take it to mean they need always Take photos exactly the way they want, right in the camera. This is often not possible, and depending on your genre, it can be frustrating.

For example, when it comes to outdoor editorial portraiture, which is one of my favorite shoots to do, you’re often stuck with the conditions you get in. You can use artificial light to turn the scene into something a little more engaging, but the sky and ambient light are designed with stone. In times like these, there’s no shame in relying on Adobe Photoshop to get the results you want. I had to shoot an image set in a storm, in the UK. Where I live, you’ll wait months for a soft buzz, so we had to improvise. The visual style and drama were achieved in post-production and that was simply my go-to.

What’s your favorite way to add some drama to an image?
