How ingenious is the future weather forecast? And the forecast for the weekend.

My new podcast addresses a question I get asked often. How ingenious is the future weather forecast?

The answer has radically changed over the past three decades, and I tell you why. Just to fuel the discussion, here’s a diagram of the National Weather Service’s (GFS) global modeling skillset for different lead times (blue bars). The skill holds up well for the first four days, but you should see a big drop in the second week. This plot also shows the skill of aggregate systems where multiple forecasts are made and averaged: the skill holds longer.

My podcast also provides weekend weather forecasts and tells you how far you can drive to experience the mid 70s! See below on how to access podcasts.
