How dogs separate their nails and how to handle them – Dogster

It can be very painful for dogs to have split nails, but proper prevention and treatment for dogs will help them heal smoothly and comfortably. Understanding your dog’s different types of split nails allows you to effectively manage these injuries, along with always seeking the necessary care from your veterinarian.

Types of split dog nails

There are three ways dogs can separate their nails:

  • Vertical: occurs when the nail splits down the middle
  • Hangnail tear: with split dog hooves underneath
  • Sorrowful!

Dogs can have split nails for a variety of reasons, including excessive nail length, awkward movements on hard surfaces or carpets, age or even illness. Even the smallest tear is painful and must be treated immediately, especially if a quick or dark tear in the middle of the nail containing blood vessels and nerves is exposed.

Prevent dogs from splitting nails

To prevent your dog’s nails from breaking, trim their nails regularly and watch for bleeding. Keep nails short to prevent injury or discomfort. Kristie Thompson, owner of Paws & Claws Pet Spa in Anza, California, says that overgrown nails develop into chapping.

Treatment of split nails for dogs

Here’s a list of supplies – your split nail first aid kit – to use if your dog has a broken nail:

  • Styling powder (like KwikStop)
  • Gauze / Q-tip
  • Veterinary wrap
  • Soft Sock
  • Nail scissors (small cracks)

If your dog has split nails:

  1. Apply hemostatic powder to stop bleeding, hold Q-tip or gauze on nail for 45 seconds.
  2. Once under control, nails should only be treated and removed at your veterinarian’s office. Never remove a part of the nail that has been removed by yourself because it increases pain or infection!
  3. Until you get to the vet, wrap your dog’s paws in gauze and a vet wrap (or socks) temporarily.

Medical treatment for dogs with split nails may include sedatives, pain relievers, antibiotics, and bandages. Don’t worry, your dog’s nails will grow back over time.

“I recommend wearing a doggie shoe with Velcro over the bandaged foot and keeping the foot clean and dry,” says Kristie. An example is Health brand of Healers Take care of the pet.

Split nails are just as painful as if they were “cracked”, but rest assured! Maintaining these safety techniques and veterinary assistance will give your dog a much greater sense of relief and ease.
