I started the day outside the gates of Buckingham Palace at 5:30 a.m. BST before moving to the courtyard of Westminster Abbey, where the Queen’s life is being commemorated at a state funeral. I watched her coffin, clad in royal standards, lifted from the carriage by eight soldiers from the Queen’s Company, 1st Guards Grenadier Battalion. The dwarf soldiers, who had been captured from the draft, stood solemnly, without breaking a sweat.
