Sweden’s new right-wing government has sparked a wave of protests after removing the Environment Ministry in a move the opposition saw as “devastating”.
Previously, the Department was a high-level independent department with a cabinet minister, but now it will function as part of an alternate ministry.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson launched his new cabinet on Tuesday, and despite his appointment as Minister of Climate and Environment – 26-year-old Liberal MP Romina Pourmokhtari– she will work under the leadership of the Christian Democratic Party Ebba BuschThe new Minister of Energy, Business and Industry, instead of leading his own ministry.
Leader of the Swedes Greens, Per Bolundnote that for the first time in 35 years Sweden will not have a dedicated environment ministry.
“It is impossible to describe more clearly how little this government attaches importance to the environment and the climate. This is a historic decision with devastating consequences for environmental issues,” Bolund said.
