Wide-angle lenses are almost always the first thing that landscape photographers turn to, and of course, there’s a good reason they’re so popular in the genre. That being said, long telephoto lenses can produce equally interesting images and may actually be a better choice for certain images. The extra compression can bring the elements of the frame closer together, which can increase the dramaticness of the image. Perhaps more importantly, in my opinion, they are able to solve a common problem in the genre, which is an overly busy frame. They allow you to select one or just a few elements in a scene and create simpler, more direct images that contain only what is really needed to tell the story.
