‘House of Gucci’ review: Lady Gaga and Adam Driver star in a handsome reality-based drama rather than a delectable piece of trash

Based on a book and covering nearly two decades from the late ’70s to the mid ’90s, the film revolves around the relationship between Gaga’s Patrizia and Maurizio Gucci’s Driver. The heir is initially rejected by his father (Jeremy Irons) for marrying a lower-class girl, before being drawn back by his colorful uncle Aldo (Al Pacino), who sees Maurizio as having a lot of potential. more qualified to lead the family business. than his handsome son, Paolo (Jared Leto, under the worst make-up since Tom Cruise starred in “Tropic Thunder”).

The story starts off quite intensely, as Patrizia clearly has an eye on Maurizio, making his father’s suspicions that she’s “after your money, like all” not seem so far-fetched.

Once together, he is as happy as an outcast but she yearns for more, pressuring him to return to the good family goodwill and ultimately to push for control. more at the expense of his loved ones, despite frequent reminders that she claims the name “Gucci” comes by marriage, not blood.

“It’s time to take out the trash,” said Patrizia, in one of the lines apparently written to be used for upcoming attractions.

It’s a very old story, but one that happened unexpectedly when the money arrived and the authorities announced the family’s finances.

However, other than the over-the-top performance, Leto’s “House of Gucci” scenery really doesn’t go any further to emphasize the absurdity of it all, which makes the whole exercise seem a bit clunky at times. , the Lifetime movie has far more stars than either of the two obvious alternatives — namely, a Coen brothers farce, or a truly gripping tale of lust and greed.

Instead, this old “House” can be enjoyed for the prodigiousness of its performances (though the highlights, most importantly Driver’s, let’s get used to it) and the situations. soap that doesn’t feel like the appeal the combination of marquee names in front and behind the camera is designed to bring.

After breaking through her work in “A star was born,” Gaga proves she’s more than just a one-trick pony, capturing Patrizia’s lust and charm, which prompts her father’s male employees to applaud and make calls as she mounts. He entered his business. For Driver, his unusual year has included the weird musical “Annette” and historical dramas “Last match” (also with Scott’s direction), reflects how the actor is required without fully reinforcing the case why.

Undoubtedly, the detailed touches that go into the look and sound of the film are impeccable, from the first disco soundtrack (you can step out to humming Donna Summer tunes) to the flashy fashion and performances on the stage.

In other words, come with the right attitude, and “House of Gucci” can still be a fun one. It’s just that despite all the lavish furnishings, it was built on a shaky foundation.

“House of Gucci” opens November 19 in US theaters. It is rated R.
