This week in racing game news:

Winners of the “Hot Wheels Unleashed” Design Battle competition will see their designs sold worldwide – but that’s

Starting today, “Hot Wheels Unleashed” players can compete for the chance to sell their own in-game design as a real-life Hot Wheels toy worldwide. Using the powerful livery editor in “Hot Wheels Unleashed”, players can create an impressive range of designs. Until February 14, you’ll be able to upload up to 100 different designs for review. If you win, Mattel will use your design to make a real-life Hot Wheels toy.

On the surface, this sounds like a pretty great opportunity, but unfortunately the prize only seems to be worth having the privilege of seeing their multi-million dollar business with income from your hard work, while the lucky designer gets, as far as we can tell, absolutely nothing. The Terms and conditions of the contest frankly states that “personal recognition constitutes an ‘award’ to the author of the selected work” and that if you win, “by signing the letter of acceptance and transferring the rights, the author of the painting selected as the winner transfers to Mattel Inc., without any exclusion, all rights of copyright and economic exploitation, for the purpose of producing the medium described in above, without limitation of time or territory, with the express disclaimer of the author of any and all economic claims against Mattel Inc., its promoters, and their nominal successors .”

That doesn’t seem like a “prize” to us, but if you still want to participate, you’ll have until February 14 to do so.

Next “Twisted Metal” Officially Made at Sony

VGC reported that a new “Twisted Metal” has finally arrived and the project is being spearheaded by Sony’s first-party studio Firesprite. The interesting way, Firesprite is primarily experienced in creating games for Playstation VR, which begs the question, will we be able to get a virtual reality version of the upcoming battle royale racer? Hopefully we won’t have to wait long to find out because with a TV series in development at the same time, it looks like Sony is preparing for a big killer ice cream vans promoted in the very near future.

Take-Two finally remembered that “Midnight Club” existed, but it felt like our wishes were granted through the monkey’s paws.

Over the past week, it has been reported that Take-Two Interactive, owner of monster developers like Rockstar and 2K Games, has bought Zynga (prolific mobile game developer) in a billion dollar deal. That’s exciting or devastating depending on your view of mobile gaming, but it’s undeniably interesting as IGN reported that during an investor call, the CEO Take-Two’s executive director, Strauss Zelnick actually acknowledged “The Midnight Club” in an image referencing the company that owns some of the “most iconic brands in the world.” This marks the first sign of life for the franchise in years, and while it’s interesting the reference to the game may mean it’s not completely dead, fans of the franchise was worried that, starring Zynga, “Midnight Club” might be relegated to mobile devices instead of being an official console game. Of course only time will tell, and hey, maybe a portable “Midnight Club” could be good? We’ll just have to wait and see.
