Sgt. Christopher Covelli, of the Lake County Main Crime Task Force, said police recovered a rifle from the scene of the deadly shooting on July 4 Parade in Highland Park, Illinois.

Covelli said he could not reveal details about where the gun was found, but he said it appeared the shooter “shot from a roof,” but did not have specifics on which roof.

The official said the suspect was not currently in custody, adding that it was a very active scene and at this point the shooting appeared to be “completely random.” He also said that at this point in the investigation, police believe there is only one shooter.

Officials say there is a perimeter around the downtown area and people are encouraged to stay indoors. They also said it did not appear that the suspect was barricaded anywhere and that they were working to identify the shooter.

Authorities are asking anyone with video to contact Highland Park police at 847 432-7720.

CNN’s Claudia Dominguez contributed reporting to this post.
