A Florida man was heartbroken when his truck was stolen minutes after a visit to Louisiana. However, it was not the truck that Stuart Trahan mourned. His beloved Labrador Retriever was in the truck at the time of the theft. But this story ends with a happy ending in the form of a well-timed reunion to celebrate Thanksgiving!

Stuart and his wife had just arrived in New Orleans when his 2018 Dodge Ram 2500 was stolen from the city’s Gentilly neighborhood. Watching the truck drive away with his best friend Sam barking loudly inside made the dog’s father very heartbroken.

Happened too fast

Having just arrived at his daughter’s house after a ten-hour drive from Florida, Stuart ditched his truck and followed Sam as he unpacked and brought it inside. Sam, short for Samson the Great, sat in the back seat of Ram’s stretched cab, watching his father work. Little do they know that they are being watched by others.

Stuart had locked and unlocked the doors between trips, but during one return to the truck, when he unlocked the car, a dark convertible accelerated, someone jumped out of the truck and into the truck. . And just like that, the thief molted. Stuart couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw his truck take off with Sam inside.

“It doesn’t seem real,” explain Stuart. “It was like, ‘Oh my God, what just happened?’ Then I was like, ‘Sam, oh my God.’”

In a television interview about the incident, Stuart was moved as he recalled thinking about how scared and confused his best friend must have been.

He’s one of the family, he said. “I held it when it was this big, and it’s this big now, you know, and it’s just a—it’s a lovely, lovely creature, you know. He is part of us.”

And everywhere, Stuart means it. Sam got his own job badge just so he could be by his father’s side in the field.

‘My work badge is in the car, but he has his work badge. I can take him to work and we both wear our work badges to work, and so he’s a great friend, and he’s one of my kids.”

A man and his dog reunited

Bringing Sam home is Stuart’s only priority, the devoted dog lover explains: “I don’t care about the truck.”

And through the ever-impressive efforts of the rescue community and law enforcement, Sam and Stuart were reunited.
