Boxing insider are diving into billboards and they’re doing it in style at Sony Hall in Times Square.
At this venue, hit the ground running in the middle of the Broadway theater district, the NYC area boxers will take center stage on Thursday night, October 13.
Boxing Insider’s “New Beginnings” embodies the spirit of the “club show” that has long been the lifeblood of the sport. It includes local favorites that originated in the community, along with international stars who have made their way to the Greater New York area.
A former world champion and three other world ranked competitors will be present and take their place in the ring.
Most of the attention will be around the person born in Brooklyn Heather Hardy (22-2, 4 KO’s), who brings “The Heat” back after 17 months of inactivity, as she finishes one more time at the world championships. Hardy was the World Boxing Organization women’s featherweight world champion until she lost her decisive match (also a contest for the World Boxing Council interim featherweight title) to Amanda Serrano, who was awarded was last seen lighting up Madison Square Garden in an epic battle with Katie Taylor.
Hardy, ranked #12 in the Women’s International Boxing Association light heavyweight division, will not have a competition in her comeback. In a light encounter of eight rounds, she will be countered by undefeated Chelsey Anderson (6-0, 2 KO’s) who hail from Yorba Linda, CA across the country and brought home the 13th WBC world ranking with her.
In a copper feature, Ivan Goluba native of Ukraine now living in Brooklyn, will put his USBA welterweight title against Chicago Vernon Brown (13-2-1, 9 KOs) in a match of pairs. Golub (20-1, 15 KO’s), known as “The Volk”, is ranked #7 in the world by the International Boxing Federation.
Fans at Sony Hall will also have a chance to watch Andy Dominguez (7-0.5 KO) of the Bronx, an active flyweight who currently holds the Fedecentro title of the World Boxing Association, which he has placed first. At the age of 24, he was ranked 14th in the world in the WBA rankings.
Unpredictable Nadim Salloum (10-1, 3 KOs), the first professional boxer born and raised in Lebanon, will be witnessed in a six-round super middleweight bout. Salloum, who now lives in Brooklyn, has a large following and voice among his countrymen in the New York City area.
Another light weight on the card is Orville Crooks (3-0.2 KO), one of the best amateur tennis players New York has produced in recent years. Crooks, who hails from the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, is both the U.S. Amateur champion and the National Golden Glove champion. For him, the sky really is the limit.
