Hyundai Mobis, one of the world’s leading auto suppliers, has opened the door to cars that can check your vitals – looking at posture, heart rate and even waves Brain.
While current applications are limited, it is claimed that systems like these will play a role as vehicles become more capable of self-driving – for example by creating cars know when to take over their driver, if the human at the wheel becomes incapacitated.
This Smart Cabin Controller (SCC) system is being billed as “something like an advanced brain that can analyze changing vital signs in real time”.
SCC uses 3D cameras to record the posture of the occupants of the vehicle; an electrocardiogram sensor mounted on the steering wheel; a sensor placed in the ear to measure brain waves running around the ear; and an HVAC sensor to measure cabin temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide levels.
The central control unit captures various vital signs collected from these sensors in real time.
For example, it will prompt the car to recommend that you switch to autopilot if the ECG sensor detects high levels of stress in the driver.
“This technology is expected to further develop to be able to guide the vehicle to the emergency room in the event of an emergency, such as a cardiac arrest,” Hyundai Mobis added.
This bit is clearly more long-term thinking.
Other trivial uses of SCC include asking the vehicle to open its windows or switch to A/C mode for outside traffic if the CO2 level inside is found to be too high.
“With this new controller, the company is now on the path to realizing safety technology that focuses on the occupants rather than the performance of the vehicle,” the company added.
The company plans to preempt a nascent market, combining healthcare technology with mobility. It claims that auto suppliers are “unprecedentedly showing a move towards securing specialists in the field of biotechnology or robotics” just for this purpose.
