Havasu Falls in Grand Canyon open to visitors

Havasu Falls – the famous waterfall at the bottom of the Grand Canyon near the remote village of Supai, Arizona – is reopening after three years of closure.

This location is said to be one of the most beautiful places you can walk to in Arizona and it is the ancestral home of the Havasupai Tribe. It was difficult to obtain permits even before the pandemic, when the popular Instagram site was closed to protect the health of the tribe residing there. That outage lasted three years due to the pandemic and a series of setbacks — including the devastating October 2022 flooding caused by heavy rain.

tribe announced the falls will reopen on February 1st to respect existing permits. No new licenses will be released for 2023. The only way to win a license this year is to purchase one from the official transfer list maintained by the tribe.

You must create an online account at Booking Havasupai to see what’s available. It’s the only official website where you can buy a permit or participate in the lottery system for a future hiking permit. Open reservations are posted online daily at 8 a.m. local time; The opening is based on cancellations by other hikers.

Prices for the 2023 tourist season are as follows:

All campground reservations are for four days and three nights and cost $395 per person. Booking at the motel is $1,980 a room for four days and three nights. Each room has two queen beds and sleeps up to four adults. Package mule service is available for $400 round trip per dollar.

The tribe ended its relationship with outside tour operators in 2016, so there are no experience guides for less experienced hikers and campers. The nearly 10-mile one-way hike to Havasupai is not a day trip. You should only try it with a license.

The Havasupai Tourism Office has confirmed to TPG that the draw for future permits is expected to open in early February 2024; Exact date is yet to be determined. In previous years, licenses were sold out in minutes.

If hiking to Havasu Falls is on your to-do list, create an account online and try your luck when booking transfers for 2023. If you’re lucky enough to apply permit, plan and prepare as much as possible before your trip. Always remember to leave no trace and respect tribal land rules.
