The fight between Jake Paul and Hasim Rahman Jr on August 6th caused a stir for many reasons, one being the weight difference between the two.
Rahman Jr was a natural weight classifier who eventually hit the 224lbs weight class, while Paul ranked himself in the Cruiserweight class and fought around the 190lb mark.
For the pay-per-view event at Madison Square Garden, Rahman Jr had to initially put in a 200lb limit before weighing a second time on the morning of the match, where he had to stay under 214lb. As for the fight itself, the 31-year-old can enter the ring without restrictions.
The professional boxer, who lost his final bout to James Morrison via TKO, has revealed the pressure he was under to meet the weight requirement for the bout, with strict contract penalties imposed apply if he comes – with the possibility of getting a wallet as low as $5,000:
“Every pound [I come in] than I lost 25% of my wallet. “
“They leave a lot behind when you are dealing with Jake Paul and his antics. For example, if I come in at 202lb for the weight and then 216lb for the rehydration scale I will get the minimum, which I think is $5,000. “
“Two pounds that they fear. They wanted to put pressure on me to make the weight say ‘you’re losing 25% for every pound you’re passing’ – so if I hit 204lb I’ll get a bare minimum of $5,000. “
