GTA Trilogy Def Ed is on sale again, still a mess

After pulling Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Final EditionThe PC version was about to go on sale shortly after Thursday’s launch, Rockstar returned it to their store overnight. GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas Remastered Collections what a mess but apparently the reason for its disappearance was that they accidentally left in files they shouldn’t have, including songs that weren’t in the game. Well, now it’s on sale again, and it still looks messy. Hey Rockstar, can now consider reselling the original versions.

Rockstar announced right after midnight this means PC Def Ed is now on sale again in the Rockstar Store. Yes, they didn’t pull it out out of embarrassment or to fix it, it was still destroyed. Turns out those were just files, I guess. Players have discovered as well as songs not included in this version (perhaps due to unlicensed), the download includes uncompiled code complete with developer comments.

“We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience,” Rockstar said above their support site. “We’re also working to improve and update overall performance as we move forward. We’d like to thank everyone for their patience as we work through these issues.”

Even people who bought the game can’t play it fairly because Rockstar’s entire Launcher app has stopped working. It’s an issue that could hit other stores, sure, but Rockstar’s is particularly annoying—and the only way to get the game to PC.

But yeah, the remodels are still a mess. Still some bad art direction decisions. Still the same lotta characters with horrifying jagged skeletons. Still a nasty clash of realistic effects and animated characters. Still a sparkling rain. There are still many obvious typos. Still some confusing physics. Still the characters in the cutscene get killed by traffic.

£55 for an older version of the game would have been less frustrating if Rockstar hadn’t removed the original versions for sale after the announcement of Def Ed. This is clearly how these iconic games will be ‘preserved’ for posterity. Repairers that replace the original are not good at the best of times and this is far from the best of times.

Disclosure: I have friends who work at Rockstar about… what? idk.
