Groupie Doll’s Daughter Doll Baby earns debut score


This column highlights the performance of young women who have had no more than five starts and sold for more than $500,000 in public auction, have a sibling who is a grade/group winner, or has a grade/group level winners. BloodHorse’s research shows that particular maiden winners who meet these criteria are more likely to become scored bets winners.

Whisper Hill Ranch Hybrid Baby doll a daughter of Tapit and two times champion Groupie doll scored an extended win on his January 30th debut for coach Ralph Nicks at Gulfstream Park.

The 3-year-old entered a field of six other sophomores in a test for seven-haired girls. Removed by Jose Ortiz, Doll Baby sprinted out of the gate and headed straight for the lead to place fractions of: 22.92, :45.63 and 1:11.31 through six clamps. She then galloped to finish the distance in a final time of 1:25.34 on the fast track.

The foal is the fourth pony to race out of the championship mare, who won the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) two years in a row 2012-13. Whisper Hill purchased the Groupie Doll for $3.1 million from the Trackside Farm shipment at the November 2013 Livestock Share Sale in Keeneland. Groupie Doll created two other winners (both by Tapit) in Ability to touch who won one of the nine starts, and Doll Collection , who has won or bet six times from eight starts. She also has a 2 year old kid Evenly ponies and bred to Sightstown for the year 2022.

Two races later on the same day, Michael Tabor’s Beside myself win for coach Todd Pletcher for the third time on Gulfstream grass. The Uncle Mo filly, who debuted on October 29 at the age of 2, finished third in her previous two starts.

In Sunday’s 3-year-old girl test, running at about 1/16 mile, Beside Herself ran a similar race with Doll Baby, finishing early but at a more moderate pace. Fractions were clicked on: 24.96, :49.87, and 1:14.28 through six contours and then jockey Luis Saez kept clarity to win 3 1/4 length to finish with a score of 1:43.26 on solid grass.

Bred by Chelston, Beside Herself is not a 3rd class Giant’s Causeway Excited mare.

Two other 3-year-old winners at Gulfstream this week sold well at auction. First, Michael Tabor’s Comic won a fifth start on January 27 for coach Simon Callaghan.

Comic Breaks Her Girlhood at Gulfstream Park

The comic, which was ridden by Julien Leparoux from the middle of the pack to score by the neck in a roughly five lap race on an all-weather track (originally scheduled for grass), is racing in Southern California in 2021. She made the trip to South Florida for her 2022 debut, where she finished second in the special maiden weight class on January 8 in all weather. She finished her first win distance: 57.29. The Realistic jokes filly didn’t finish the board in her five starts.

Raised by Drs Amy Rabanal, Constance Wickes and Highclere, Comedic is not of the Speightstown Goforitmrsmiller mares, who are half-sisters to numerous performers and stake producers, including warlords. won the Miss Isella and Sir Cherokee ratings. She was purchased for $800,000 by agents Jamie McCalmont and Ben McElroy at The Gulfstream Sale, Fasig-Tipton’s select 2-year-olds during the Florida training sale, from SGV Thoroughbreds consignment.

The remaining winner is practitioner Pletcher Swing Shift who took her first win in stringing in a girls’ seven-round test on January 29 under the guidance of Irad Ortiz Jr.

Swing Shift wins at first question at Gulfstream Park

The Midnight storm colt won 1 1/4 of the length in a final time of 1:24.53 on the fast track. He is owned by WinStar Farm, Woodford Thoroughbreds, Commonwealth and Siena Farm.

Bred by Siena Farms, the Swing Shift was not a Charlie Tasunke Indian mare and was purchased for $550,000 at Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring 2 year olds being trained in a Woodford Thoroughbreds consignment.

The path of purity won his first season and started Wednesday on Saturday at Oaklawn Park. The Quality Sugar Colt raced under Luis Contreras in 12th place and overcame much of the 1/16-mile test before making progress and then rallying for a four-time stretch win.

Ethereal Road coached by D. Wayne Lukas finished 1:46.82 on the fast track.

Lightning strike won his second start at Delta Downs for trainer Steve Asmussen on January 28, giving his male another winner Practical Joke. The pony walked on the yard of 9 other 3-year-olds with 5 feathers.

Lightning Struck raced in midfield under the leadership of Ty Kennedy, racing throughout the first leg to pick horses, and strive for the lead in the round. He won 3/4 of the length in a final time of 1:00.34 on the fast track.

Raised by Nursery Place, Lightning Struck is located outside of Grindstone mare Stone Hope, the dam of Qatar Airways winner Minstrel Stakes (G2) Spirit of Valor .
