The global transition to green energy has stalled

This is reported by many media. Simply put, global energy demand is growing faster than the expansion of renewables, or at least so fast that the increase is only slightly reflected in the overall balance. For example, there is German taz (emphasis added):
Only a slight increase of two percentage points over the entire decade: In 2020, only 12.6% of global energy demand will be met by renewable energy. In 2009, this figure was 10.6%. This is the conclusion drawn by think tank REN21 in one report presented by energy experts on Wednesday.
According to the report, progress is being made in the expansion of power plants that produce renewable electricity, such as solar plants, wind turbines, hydroelectric plants – but the fossil capacity is not reduced. Instead, the demand for energy continues to increase, successfully eat renewable energy.
Otherwise, these will be very noticeable. Just last year, there was another record for the addition of renewable power plants: 314 gigawatts of capacity were connected to the grid. The fact that the share of renewables has not increased is bad enough from a climate protection standpoint. It is also serious that 12.6% of the ecological energy market share is largely due to biomass burningthat is, for a type of energy generation that has been the subject of much environmental criticism.
The second largest market share, 3.9%, comes from hydroelectric power plants – such as large dams – which are also controversial in environmentalist circles. In the REN21 report, solar and wind energy, which are the main focus in Germany, along with geothermal energy, are estimated accounts for only 2.8% of global energy production and is classified under ‘other’. ”
