Calumet Farm’s grade 1 winner and millionaire True Timber has been retired from racing, the farm confirmed Oct. 26. No stud plans have been finalized.
The 7-year-old son of Mineshaft was bred in Kentucky by Marc and Vinka Ferrell out of the unraced Tiznow mare Queen’s Wood, who is a half sister to two stakes-placed winners and is from the immediate family of Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Pleasantly Perfect and European champion 2-year-old filly Elusive Kate.
Calumet bought True Timber as a weanling for $170,000 out of St. George Sales’ consignment at the 2014 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
With trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, True Timber became a winner at 2 and at 3 placed twice in graded stakes. He would continue coming oh so close in graded company with a second in the Cigar Mile Presented by NYRA Bets (G1) by three-quarters of a length in 2018 and a third in the Cigar Mile in 2019. In mid-2020 McLaughlin retired from training and the horse went to Jack Sisterson, who is a private trainer for Calumet. That year True Timber broke through and won the Cigar Mile by 5 1/2 lengths.
True Timber was aimed for the 2021 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) but missed the race due to injury. He retires with a 5-5-9 record from 29 starts and earned $1,215,150.
