Siena found that negative 40 net favorable rating includes 56% of Republican respondents, along with a majority of Democrats and independents.

Santos has vow to serve the rest of his two-year term in the house, dismiss harsh condemnation from his own Republicans on Long Island, where his congressional district is located.

He has faced continued, intensified scrutiny after a sensational New York Times report last month questioned key details in the newly elected congressman’s biography, including both his education and career.

Santos has admitted to “beautifying” sections of his resume and apologizing, though he did not answer all questions surrounding his claims about himself.

He has also denied some of the most serious charges against him, including that he took off with thousands of dollars raised to help sponsor a surgery for a dying dog of a disabled veteran.

Santos also failed to address questions about the origins of his apparent wealth, some of which was used to fund his successful congressional campaign.

Investigators at the federal, state, local and international levels are looking into Santos.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and other top Republicans declined to join calls for Santos to step down. McCarthy leads with a slim majority of the GOP House, which has proven difficult to unify after 15 votes for the speaker.

If Santos leaves office, that will likely trigger a particularly competitive New York election for his seat.
