Google Chrome will save you from difficult downloads from suspicious HTTP links | Tech news

Google Chrome is planning to roll out a feature to block insecure HTTP downloads. Know all the details here.

Google is preparing to roll out a new feature that will protect you from insecure HTTP downloads. You must have noticed that when you visit any HTTP website, Google Chrome will mark it as “not secure” in the address bar on your Android smartphone. Now, Google is preparing to bring in a security option that will block any “unsafe” downloads you might want to try through HTTP sites, 9to5Google has reported. Notably, over the past few years, Google has been trying to make the Chrome browser more secure by encouraging users to only use HTTPS sites whenever possible.

One of the most remarkable steps Google done is to mark any HTTP site as “Not Secure” in the address bar. Not only constriction, Chrome browser also blocks secure websites from using insecure web forms by default. Even recently, Google created a new toggle in Settings to “Always use secure connections”. After you enable the feature, Chrome will attempt to “upgrade” to the HTTPS version of your site, in case you accidentally navigate to an insecure version. Furthermore, in the absence of a secure version, Chrome will show you an on-screen warning while asking if you want to continue.

The report further explains that Google is currently planning to expand this feature to protect Chrome users from any and all potentially unsafe HTTP downloads. This goes a step further than current security settings by blocking downloads from any connection associated with an unsafe website. Assuming you click an HTTPS download link that takes you to an insecure HTTP server, then Google Chrome’s security feature will block the download as unsafe, the report explains.

However, it should be noted that this feature is still in the development stage. 9to5Google’s report says that it’s likely that the feature won’t be tested more widely until Chrome 111, which will be released in March 2023. Therefore, the final version of the feature will likely be out. eyes in 2023.
