FCAI releases motorcycle sales figures for Q1 2022
FCAI today released sales figures for motorcycles, scooters and off-road vehicles (OHVs) for the first quarter of 2022.
According to FCAI data, a total of 24,338 motorcycles, scooters and OHVs were sold between January and March. This is down 10.7% from the 2021 figures. However, as we explain further, this does not paint an accurate overall picture that reflects the current state of the market.
Off-road motorcycles recorded 39.6% of total sales with 9,644 units sold. This is a 17.2% decrease from the 2021 figures.
Road motorbikes accounted for 39.9% of total sales, with 9,723 units sold. This is a 12% increase over the 2021 figures.
The ATV/SSV market recorded a 40% drop in 2021 figures. This numbered a total of 3,275 units sold, representing 13.5% of the total market.
Scooters accounted for the smallest share of sales in the first quarter with 1,696 units sold. This represents a 15% increase over the 2021 figures and 7.00% of total sales.
Sales of many models across all sectors have been limited due to supply issues.
But this is far from the whole picture…
It should be noted that some brands are not represented in the official audited figures regarding motorcycle sales. UMI brands such as MV Agusta, Royal Enfield and Reiju, along with the likes of Sherco, CF Moto, Kymco and SWM under Mojo Motorcycles, are not included in the sales figures produced by these companies. choose not to be a member of the Federal Chamber of the Automotive Industry.
An educational estimate suggests that these brands represent about 10-15% of the total market, so the data compiled from audited figures covers about 85-90% of motorcycles. sold in Australia.
Detailed sales data is being retained
Unfortunately, these are the only figures we currently receive from the official sales test. Historically, we’ve seen brands by brand and model through modeling gigs, but FCAI-affiliated brands now keep their tags close to their chests and refuse to release detailed data, that’s why it’s too late you don’t see regular detailed motorcycle sales figures breakdown by make and model segment which we bring to you every quarter on MCNews.com.au.
New Zealand has a transparent mechanism with publicly reporting monthly subscription data but here things have been a bit secretive…
