GOG.com focuses on “handpicked” DRM-free games amid financial loss

CD Projekt says it is refocusing GOG, their digital storefront, “more on its core business.” This is because the store is losing money – about $2.21 million as of now.

“In terms of GOG, its performance has been a real challenge, and we have recently taken measures to improve its financial position,” said CD Projekt CFO Piotr Nielubowicz in a statement. Monday’s quarterly earnings call. “First and foremost, we decided that GOG should focus more on its core business, which means offering handpicked games with a unique DRM-free philosophy. In line with this approach, there will be changes in the team structure.”

News about GOG was included in CD Projekt’s Q3 financial results, as reported by GI.biz. GOG posted a loss in a row for the first three quarters of 2021, compared with a steady profit in the same period last year.

This is not the first time GOG has made adjustments to its transfers. The storefront launched initially as Good Old Games, focusing on reviving classic games that weren’t available or hard to get and making them available without DRM. In recent years, they’ve expanded their approach to include new games, keys to other storefronts, and an in-store agnostic game launcher called GOG Galaxy. . In 2019, GOG leaving about 10% of employees redundant.

In practice, what “carefully selected game selection” means is unclear. Maybe they’re currently choosing which games to sell with their feet. Or maybe it means more selective rather than oopsie-doopsie allow Hitman to be on the store when it basically has DRM.

CD Projekt also talks about Cyberpunk 2077 future plans in the same investor explosion.
