GMC Hummer EV: Australian company takes giant electric vehicle underground

The world’s fastest production Hummer is headed to Australia, not courtesy of parent company General Motors but Australian-owned Autogroup International.

Converted en masse by Autogroup International, the 2024 GMC Hummer EV — in both pickup and SUV body styles — is now shipping worldwide to more than 40 right-hand drive countries.

Autogroup International is an Australian owned and Sri Lanka based company with over 30 years of experience in converting left hand drive vehicles to right hand drive vehicles.

Specializing in American SUVs, muscle cars and pickup trucks, the company has invested heavily to convert the Hummer EV to right-hand drive in preparation for new markets including Australia.

The company says the mirror image conversion process, which included complex electromechanical engineering by the team at Autogroup International, resulted in the Hummer EV being converted safely, certified and ADR compliant under its ISO 9001:2015 quality assurance program.

The GMC Hummer EV is instantly recognizable with a design clearly influenced by the classic Hummer H2 and H3, but equipped with an electric powertrain that delivers incredible performance.

There are a number of different versions, including the Hummer EV 2 with two motors and 419kW of power, the Hummer EV 3 with three motors delivering 610kW of power and the limited edition Hummer EV 3 ‘Omega’ with a Neptune Matte Blue exterior and a host of off-road enhancements.

With a claimed power output of 619kW, the Hummer EV 3 can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.5 seconds and has an electric range said to be around 500km.

For off-road use, the car has rear-wheel steering with “cornering” capabilities. Under the right trunk, Watts to Freedom mode provides crazy acceleration, the air suspension provides six inches of adjustable lift, and a removable “infinity panel” provides an open-air experience.

While most trims come with 22-inch wheels, the EV 3 will offer an Extreme Terrain Package that includes 18-inch beadlock-compatible wheels.

However, with production limited to just 550 units, it’s unclear whether we’ll ever see any of these powerful models land on Australian shores.

Tech features include 800V DC fast charging, Ultravision camera system with underbody camera, 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 14-speaker Bose premium audio system and semi-automatic parking function.

It takes Autogroup International around four weeks to convert a Hummer EV to right-hand drive and importantly, the process is done with full approval and compliance, allowing the vehicle to be legally imported into all right-hand drive countries.

Each vehicle comes with a three-year full vehicle warranty, backed by Autogroup International.

“The launch of the 2024 right-hand drive Hummer EV SUV and pickup builds on our legacy of converting hundreds of legacy Hummer H2s and H3s in the early 2000s, and the Hummer EV is now available to our customers in right-hand drive countries around the world,” said Rob Hill, CEO of Autogroup International.

“It is a testament to my team, who have decades of experience, along with our electrical, mechanical and reverse engineering teams plus our excellent manufacturing team, that Autogroup International can deliver a safe, legal and flawless right-hand drive Hummer EV.”

With an expected price tag of between $150,000 and $165,000, the Hummer EV’s take could be successful based on its performance and capabilities, but the big test will be how it performs when towing.
