No matter how thick the headphones were in Gervonta Davis’ ears, he continued to hear doubters and naysayers.
With just a few days to go before his game against Isaac Cruz, Davis once again found himself at the center of harsh punishment.
Although Davis has won world titles in many weight classes, he feels as though what he has achieved is never enough. On June 26, 2021, Davis tried to prove his status among the elite of boxing. On that night, the tough Baltimore-born tennis player successfully moved up two weight divisions to the previously undefeated Mario Barrios, the first loss of his career. In the process, Davis stripped of his WBA “Regular” lightweight title to become a three-division champion.
However, despite his efforts, Davis’ resume was denigrated time and time again. While the 27-year-old did his best to ignore the noises, he was awed by the constant chatter.
“They criticized me,” Davis said in an interview with Fight Hub TV. “They say nothing about the other fighters and the people they fight. They always tell me. ”
Despite what he perceives as unfair treatment, Davis remains focused on continuing his journey up the ladder. This coming weekend, December 5, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, Davis will be looking to fast-track Isaac Cruz.
Initially, Davis was set up to take on bitter longtime rival, Rolando Romero. However, with Romero facing some legal issues, he was carded and later replaced with Cruz.
Though less well known in the public eye, Cruz has had 17 straight wins since a single defeat to Luis Miguel Montano in 2016.
However, whether it was Romero or Cruz, the overwhelming thought process surrounding both boxers didn’t pose much of a threat to Davis. Regardless of his level of protest, Davis scrutinized the names his contemporaries were stepping onto the ring.
Overall, Baltimore products still fail to impress their competition. However, Davis can’t seem to understand why his critics continue to point in his direction.
