Gene D’Angelo, KFS and DC Colorist, Has Handed
Phrase is spreading on social media that Gene D’Angelo has handed away.
Anthony Tollin gives a nice profile of Gene’s career:
I simply obtained the unhappy information that ace colorist GENE D’ANGELO lately handed away at age 97. Gene started his lengthy comics profession at King Options Syndicate shortly after finishing his WWII navy service, initially pasting down Ben-Day dot patterns on day by day strips like THE PHANTOM, BLONDIE, MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN and FLASH GORDON. He quickly turned a KFS workers colorist, usually focusing his attentions on the big-gun humor strips like BLONDIE and BEETLE BAILEY. In 1977, following the departure of Liz Safian Berube, Jack Adler and I recruited Gene to affix our DC Comics freelance coloring group. D’Angelo quickly turned Julius Schwartz’s favourite colorist, brightening the pages of ACTION COMICS, SUPERMAN FAMILY, NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA and WORLD’S FINEST COMICS, together with quite a few sequence for different DC editors…
Simply heard from Lisa Chillino-Pawlick that her Uncle, Gene D’Angelo, lately handed away. He was 97. He was the previous King Options colorist that I took over from again in 1989. I labored with him briefly and he confirmed me the ropes earlier than he retired…
Noting with disappointment the passing of Gene D’Angelo, who introduced shade into the lives of hundreds of thousands of readers through the years as a colorist for King Options again to the post-war years, and DC Comics within the Bronze Age and afterwards. Gene was a meticulous employee, with a brilliant view of the world that got here via in his selections.
