Fujifilm’s new Instax Mini Evo Hybrid is an instant camera with 10 built-in lenses and 10 film effects: Digital Photography Review

Fujifilm Corporation of North America has announced the INSTAX MINI EVO Combined Instant Camera (Mini Evo). It’s a ‘hybrid’ camera because it combines traditional analog instant camera technology with digital capabilities, like the ability to select, share, and store images.

Manny Almeida, division president, Imaging Division, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, said: ‘The INSTAX MINI EVO combo camera offers a unique way to document life’s milestones. ‘This camera is designed to give photographers flexibility in choosing which images to print immediately, which to share and which to store for later access. These many unique options, when combined with the classic analog style of traditional INSTAX cameras, create a premium consumer experience that goes beyond standard instant photography. ‘

The Instax Mini Evo instant camera includes 10 built-in lenses and 10 film effects, giving photographers over 100 possible combinations to choose from. You can make prints directly from the camera using Instax Mini film or send photos to the camera roll on a connected smartphone using the Instax Mini Evo Smartphone app. In addition, a microSD card slot allows users to store images for later use. The camera includes internal memory to hold approximately 45 images. You don’t need to print every photo you take, and you don’t have to run out of Instax film which means you can’t keep using the Mini Evo. The Mini Evo includes a built-in Lithium Ion battery that allows printing of up to 100 images per charge, depending on the use case.

Available lens effects include Normal, Vignetting, Soft Focus, Blur, Fisheye, Gradation, Light Leak, Mirror, Double Exposure, and Half Frame. 10 Movie Effects including Normal, Vivid, Pale, Canvas, Monochrome, Sepia, Yellow, Red, Blue, and Classic.

The camera has a classic look, complete with a silver finish and a black faux leather coating. The camera has a built-in 28mm (equivalent) F2.0 lens. The camera’s sensor is quite small; it’s 1/5 inch CMOS with primary color filter. The digital photo is 2560 x 1920, which is about 4.9MP. The back of the camera includes a few buttons and a 3-inch LCD to aid in framing and navigating menus and stored images. There’s even a ‘movie advance’ lever to print, which is a touch of nostalgia. The dimensions of the camera are 87 x 122.9 x 36 mm (excluding the protrusion) and it weighs about 285 g.

The camera has an ISO range of 100 to 1600 and a shutter speed range of 1/4 to 1/8000 second. The camera can focus as close as 10cm. Exposure compensation is available from -2 to +2 EV and the camera uses a TTL metering system. In addition to auto white balance, there are several user-selectable WB presets, and the camera includes a built-in flash (range about 50 cm to 1.5 m).

Along with the Instax Mini Evo Hybrid Instant Camera, Fujifilm is releasing a new instant film, Instax Mini Stone Grey. This is a new breakthrough on the traditional white border instant film. The new gray bezel provides ‘eye-catching contrast against vivid printed images’, says Fujifilm. The new film will be available in a single pack with 10 screenings for a suggested retail price of $14.99 ($13.99 in Canada).

The Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo Hybrid Instant Camera will be available in silver/black color options. Fujifilm expects it to be available for purchase starting February 2022 with a suggested retail price of $199.95 USD ($249.99 CAD). The new Stone Gray instant film is also out in February.
