Fuel smugglers start switching to RON 95 gasoline after government announces targeted diesel subsidy plan – KPDN

Malaysian consumers are not the only ones preparing for the changes that are sure to come rationalization of diesel subsidiesBecause fuel smugglers in the North have also begun to switch from smuggling diesel to RON 95 gasoline, Bernama report.

According to Domestic Trade and Living Costs Minister (KPDN) Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, cases related to smuggling RON 95 gasoline into Thailand have increased since the government announced it was preparing to implement subsidies. Targeted supply of diesel.

Last month it was reported that the estimate RM1.2 million of subsidized diesel was smuggled enter Thailand daily through the Bukit Kayu Hitam immigration, customs, quarantine and security (ICQS) complex.

Now that diesel is about to lose its financial appeal following the removal of general subsidies for it, smugglers are now focusing on the fuel that will continue to give them a profit quite a bit, at least until it also goes through the process of rationalization.

“As a result of surveillance carried out by enforcement officers stationed at eight main entry points in Kelantan, Perak, Kedah and Perlis, there is information that they are changing their strategy,” Armizan said.

“At the same time, my Ministry discovered that method of operation of smugglers is that they regularly buy fuel at gas stations around bordering states. Previously, they used four-wheeled vehicles to smuggle gasoline, but now, they fix the fuel tank of a sedan to fill up excess gasoline,” he added.

To overcome this problem, Armizan said the ministry has issued a direction from the supply control agency to gas station owners to monitor and report vehicles found to have made multiple purchases and this will have effective from June 7. “In addition, my Ministry will also strengthen cooperation with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to conduct supervision and inspection to detect modified vehicles,” he said.
