Photographers who want to watch videos and are a little apprehensive will learn from this post. While video and photography are not the same thing, they have a big overlap in concepts and it’s likely that you know more than you think.

Do you know the studio?
You have worked with half of the people on the list (see video) and have a relationship with them. For example, you have experience guiding beautiful shots. You already know how to move team members in the direction you need them to. You worked with production assistants, producers, and customers.
Adding video to your repertoire doesn’t mean starting over for your business. Before I started directing commercials and music videos, I struggled with the concept of adding motion to my work. Then I decided to have a conversation with myself about what it really took. I just need to add a few more titles to my set and build a relationship with those people.
Then I realized that I wasn’t about to direct a big position overnight. I would probably start with small steps and add crew members based on my comfort level. I give smaller concepts to my clients until I feel proficient in my skills. You are allowed to grow, but maturity will come when you take the first step.
This video demonstrates my steps. Another director might change it up a bit, and that’s good for them. I could just share my method and since I put it in, you know it works. You can always tweak and modify to fit your personal style.
Many customers will agree with the video
It makes sense to agree to the video. And when I suggest a video, it can be a fashion movie or a trailer. It could be a feature film, documentary, or any other form of motion. Video is the future, but photos aren’t dead yet. Just like everyone else can call themselves a photographer, you too can aim for video and win.
Here’s why customers will agree to add videos to their projects:
- They paid for the hair, makeup and wardrobe. They can create a separate date for video and a day for photos, or they can spend a small amount to get both. Adding video to photography is a smaller expense than starting over another day. It makes sense!
- Many times they assume that you are just creating photos and videos that are not in your wheelchair. Let them know that it is, and that’s what excites you!
- Videos are growing! They know the value of video and the value of photography, which is why they called you in the first place. Many times clients have a larger budget than they allow. Ask them about video work because you are currently providing a solution to their problem. They can eventually say they want or deliver it.
You can do whatever you want, including videos and photos
This is the lovely part of having comment sections on the internet. It allows negative people to cast their shadows on you. Photography is not dead. Video is not dead either. People are making good money from providing either service. Yes, things have changed in the industry but people are still spending money on media work. Step 1: Avoid negative trolls on the internet. They may have made some bad decisions and now they want to spread their suffering to others. If they don’t go far, they will make sure that others will suffer.
You can make money from photography and you can make money from filming. You can create videos for individual clients like weddings and family portraits. You can target ads for brands that want to photograph your ads. How do I know this? Because I have a reservation and am working. In general, people who book jobs don’t have time to scare people online. We encourage and help others do well.
You have the skills to do this! I’ve never taken a day at film school but I’m booking a job. You have enough skills to start and build, at least. That’s why I made this video for you.
