I want to bring it back to the original. What made you curious initially about a character like Ciri?
When I got the audition, I think what made me want to play that part was the fact that I looked it up and said, “Yo, this is going to be this. big. ” It was weird because I thought that way before, then I filmed it and said, “I don’t know what it’s going to be like. Maybe it won’t work out at all.” There are many people who are fans of [the story], so I said, “Sure, even if it doesn’t do well, people will watch it.”
I was at the age you were trying to get into. … I wouldn’t be like, “No, I’m not going to play Ciri.” … That would be a bit spiritual. But even if I had all the choices in the world, I especially like the idea of being in a fantasy show or movie. When I was 14 years old, one of the movies that I really loved… I don’t know what it is about, but it is Snow White and the Hunter. So when I saw the role of Ciri, I said, “Oh my God, that’s like the same thing, a princess escaping and becoming a warrior. And then I Googled her, and she looked great, so why wouldn’t you want to play her? I remember seeing this role and saying, “This is my dream role”. And I remember thinking… When you were an actor, you were always too small, or you were too blonde or whatever, but to this, I said, “I find it right. How does a character like Ciri challenge you both as an actor and as an individual?
With every role there are challenges, and it’s almost always the same challenge, which is you’re solving the problem the whole time and deciding which way to go. There’s a lot of talk about “Oh, my character won’t do this,” and I realize it myself, but in the end, we do out of the ordinary things every day. So I think with the choice of “I can do this scene this way or that direction,” you learn to just follow your instincts. Once you get your character’s psyche, the instinct for what you do in the context of a scene will come out faster if you get a grip on their mind.
Honestly, the challenge with season two is that we just didn’t shoot in any order. We were everywhere. It was like episode one, then episode five and episode three, episode seven and episode four. It’s hard to keep up The Witcher [story line] Anyway, let alone take messy photos. So that’s definitely a challenge.
Personally, one challenge I had for season one was that I had to go through that phase in my personal life where I would become a woman. Having a gig come out where I look so young and without makeup — in fact, not just without makeup, but with white powder on my face, gray hair, and bleached eyebrows — doesn’t make you feel good about yourself. Dear. So I came across a little chapter where I was having a crisis like, “Oh my, this show is coming out, and I feel like I’m getting older, but people are going to see me as this 12-year-old- old.” I felt a little insecure about that.
