Freezing Rain – Why and Where Does It Happen? And a dry week ahead for the Northwest.

Today’s headlines are about the threat of freezing rain along the East Coast.

But the Pacific Northwest is no place for freezing rain! We have world-class freezing rain in the Columbia Gorge, Northwest Washington around Whatcom County, and especially in the Columbia River Basin east of Washington.

As noted in my previous blog, freezing fog is also common in the Columbia watershed. A map of the frequency of freezing rain across the US showing eastern Washington as a key player (below). The eastern United States receives frost when the fronts are in the Northeast or Midwest, with cold air in the north. This is the situation happening today.

My podcast today describes how and why freezing rain exists….. and describes the strange situation of liquid water occurring below subfreezing temperatures.

And my podcast also describes dry conditions for the next week… and even the possibility of sun!
